So..they bought it at 100K and now it has 200K. They paid $30,000 seven to 8 years ago and spent $15K on repairs on their ownership. They sold it to Hoovie for about $6K. That means it cost them $39K to drive it 8 years and 100K miles
It probably cost the original owner that much to own it the first 4 years

I feel compelled to express my complete disagreement with your sensationalized conclusion (title). It seems you just picked a bad year and had some bad luck. My 2015 GL-350 has none of the problems you are whining about, and yes it has a spare. I love everything about the truck, no regrets. Lastly, diesel will not ignite unless under very high pressure and precise atomization, so no reason to panic quite that much about your unfortunate leak. Relax!

Mercedes partnering with Chrysler was the last straw for the once great car maker. Now, I would not touch any Mercedes. On top of that, the styling is horrible. One can not tell a Mercedes from a Honda or Hyundai anymore.
If I were in charge of the company I would put modern engines/transmissions into the bodies of the old Mercedes cars. They used to make a beautiful car. The doors shut with the feel of closing a bank vault door.

A relative from me has a ML 280cdi from 2008. It has 25.000 Miles on it and on every hour it was driven come 10 Minutes of worktime by a mercedes benz professional, that costs $150/h in germany. He even had a cable fire in every door from a demaged control unit, the 3rd air suspension, it eats glow plugs for breakfast, the clearcoat is in an embarrassing condition and there were so many more things on this Alabama trashcan. He keeps saying he regrets having exchanged the completely broken, rusted ML 270cdi from 1999 for this junk pile, but he loves the 280cdi so much, that he has not exchanged it for an Q8 yet

Okay, sidebar comment: I wouldn't consider a $30,000 front-wheel drive, four-door "coupe" (sedan) to be "cheap". I get that it's a Mercedes, and that people worship the "prestige" of the brand 🙄, but fact of the matter is you can get a Lexus ES 350 for the same amount of money, and that car will run circles around a CLA Mercedes performance and reliability wise. This car had no business running like crap, even if it was cheap for Mercedes.
Now with that being said. I've always been a fan of the GL Mercedes in terms of aesthetic, but I've always been hesitant because I have ever heard about that car is that it is a cesspool of problems. Even when getting the V8 model, the one I would get, it is still been known for a host of mechanical, suspension, and electrical problems. This is one reason why I would never buy a Mercedes, even if I do think a lot of their cars on paper are pretty cool cars.

The GLs are really nice if you can do some of the repairs since the parts are reasonable. I have a 2008 GL550 and every time I took it to the dealer the estimate was between $2,500 and $4,000 to fix the issue. I started to do all the work several years ago and I'm almost up to 150,000 miles now. The ride, the power, the stereo, the space is really nice and it still looks great for an 08.

Ist the same with all Mercedes of this decade. The W220, C215, W210 aren't better. I'm German and I know the Cars from over here. You get them probaply for very less money. But Rust, Oil Leaks, ABC Suspension, everything breakes and costs extreamly much money. Very sad but this is the dark time of Mercedes. The 90s Mercedes (e.g. W140) and the generations of the 2010s (W205, W212...) are the only ones which are woth to buy.

Wonder how problems with that GL's (today the GLS under a NEW platform, and, yes, it's a CROSSOVER and NOT AN SUV as it is both UNIBODY and CAR BASED) problems compared with its' "poor cousin" the DDDGE DURANGO* (yes, both CROSSOVERS were made on THE SAME MERCEDES PLATFORM).
I'd bet the same year Durango is MORE RELIABLE than that year's GL.
    * last generation GL/GLS and this generation's Durango are made in Mercedes' LWB version of that platform, just as was the last generation ML/GLE and the just-to-be-replaced Jeep Grand Cherokee on the SWB version. This was one of the "parting gifts" Mercedes gave to Chrysler before they've split apart. Mercedes replace both GLE and GLS' platform a while ago....

PS: Remember Mercedes changed the names from ML to GLE and GL to GLS before they've changed the platform...
